Dreamy Island: Santorini

Santorini has truly stolen my heart. It was an absolute dream to land on this charming island! Santorini or Thira is a large cauldron which remains after an enormous volcanic eruption- well known as Caldera. This unique which characterises Santorini; the gleaming white buildings, some are topped with blue half-spheres on a cliff and the shades of turquoise of the Aegean sea as a flawless background. Something about this place is so magical which makes you enjoy every minute in this stunning place. Follow our journey here.

I traveled with my family last Summer. It was packed with tourists as Santorini is one of the most desirable destinations in Greece. To avoid the crowds, May or September would be the best choice. We flew from Athens (checked off some must visit Greek historical architecture such as Parthenon, Acropolis, etc) and it took us around 45 minutes on the plane. On the first day, we explored Fira, the capital and one of the busiest towns in Santorini. The commercial centres are located here where you can find lots of restaurants, shops, hotels, cafes, car rentals, travel agencies and other services around this area.

Recommended restaurant: Mamas Kitchen for amazing Greek foods

from moussaka, octopus, greek salad, etc.

Sunset at Fira

During our visit, we stayed in Eva’s House in Fira. The host was lovely, she took a good care of us! The room was excellent equipped with built-in USB plug, very impressive! It was a bit of walk up to the city centre, probably the only downside about this accommodation. Renting a car or scooter or ATV is preferable as you can’t count on the public transport.

A complimentary Greek cheese and wine for refreshment

We rented a car so we could commute easily to the famous beaches in Santorini. Some popular ones are Red Beach, Perissa Beach, Kamari Beach and Perivolos Beach, known as a black sand beach. We had a lunch by the beach and enjoyed the ocean view at Perissa Beach. Relaxing and sunbathing under the straw umbrellas, a glass of frappe (Greek ice coffee) would be the perfect companion in this hot day.

We booked one day tour with Water Blue agency who was very helpful. We had a hiking tour up to the active mountain on the next day. It was quite a mission as the temperature was super hot, but the view was worth for the climb. The next destination was swimming in Hot Springs which contains sulfur and good for the health. Sailing across the sea, we visited the small island, Thirassia. We had a lunch at Taverna Katina, a restaurant owned by Greek family located at the Amoudi Port. The foods were so yummy and you could easily jump into the transparent water or sunbathing. From the boat we saw the caldera from far, it was totally fascinating! Finally we were back to the main island to see the sunset at Oia.

Oia- such beautiful and photogenic place! The town which sits on the top of the island are famous for the blue domed roofs and the legendary sunset. This place is truly romantic which offers the best destination for the newlyweds.
